He probably knew their fate, how they were tortured into madness and forced to leave their son in the care of his grandmother. Lupin probably guessed that Neville’s biggest fear would be similar to what he guessed Harry’s would be- Lord Voldemort, or in Neville’s case the death eater who tortured his parents - and was planning on stepping in before Neville faced the boggart so a bunch of 13 year olds wouldn’t see Bellatrix Lestrange cackling and spitting curses in their classroom. But then Severus Snape insults Neville in front of his class, tries to shame a 13 year old boy in front of a new teacher, and Lupin is so angry. Because he had hoped that after 13 years, now they were adults, maybe Snape had gotten over himself a little and realized that he was a teacher and responsible for these kids, but apparently not. Apparently Snape was still the same petty, angry ,bitter child that he’d been in school, except now he’s bullying children half his age instead of yelling slurs at classmates. And so Lupin sees the terror in Neville’s face and realizes that, oh my god he fears his potions teacher more than the people responsible for his parents. And Lupin is so indignant and outraged that he KNOWS he has to give this kid some leverage, some way to stand up to his tormentor, and gives that to him. Lupin stands up and tells Neville EXACTLY how to conquer his fear and, moreover, how to do it in front of all his classmates who laughed at him for being scared. Remus Lupin starting off the school year by letting his students confront their biggest fears, so nothing else they face that year will be as scary. If you can beat your biggest fear, how bad can a test be? Or a big quidditch match? Or being rejected by the girl you ask out? Remus Lupin truly, deeply, cared about his students. And Snape got him fired.

keep in mind that Snape knew the entire time he was torturing Neville what had happened to his parents, but he still decided to yell and torment him. Severus Snape was a piece of absolute trash and nothing will convince me otherwise.

okay this is objectively fucking hilarious like I know it’s real but it seems like something out of a parody. I’m supposed to look at this and seriously believe that jude law is lusting after that? that his heart’s most desperate desire is that raw chicken breast with hair? I’m meant to see jude law pining after that absolute saltine of a man and not laugh??
So, I have so many issues with this it’s not even funny.
I mean, it is funny, for the reasons listed above. But it’s also not funny, because Dumbledore made it clear in Philosopher’s (Sorcerer’s) Stone that he never looked into the Mirror, because he knew what he would see - he would see who killed his sister, Arianna, and he knew it wouldn’t be the truth, it would be the answer he most desired it to be.
This scene happens after Arianna died, and if the pain is fresh enough as an old man to most desire that answer, then it is surely fresh enough back then to want it. He wouldn’t be desiring Grindelwald, despite being in love with him. At this point, Dumbledore has lost his sister, lost his brother (who blames him for her death) and he would be wanting the answer to why. Even if he loves Grindelwald, the man has become a murderer and the worst wizard in history (remember this is pre-Voldemort days.) Even if he still desired him, he would desire the idealistic and headstrong teenage boy he was, not the mass-murderer he has become.
This scene is the epitome of the HP universe canon being ignored, being twisted and defiled so WB can make more money off it.
And every time I see something like this, it makes me just a little more done with the official stuff coming out in the HP universe, and longing a little bit more for the days when the fans wrote the extra stuff readers wanted to see.
Literally every time I see something from this movie it makes me want to watch it even less.
